Ultrasonic Thickness Gauges

Ultrasonics provides a rapid and highly precise method for the measurement of wall or section thicknesses. On rough surfaces, it is more accurate than mechanical measurement methods (e.g., micrometers) because it measures the average wall thickness rather than measuring to the high points. In addition, only one side of the section to be measured needs to be accessible. This makes ultrasound a prime technique for in situ measurements of wall thicknesses on pipes.

Besides simple thickness measurement, ultrasonic thickness gauging technology is widely used for the detection of corrosion. Because the method is precise to at least 0.001", the onset of corrosion on hidden or difficult to access surfaces can be detected at an early stage.
